Unbeaten run comes to an end for Mabedi

Flames head coach, Patrick Mabedi has suffered his first defeat in open play match, following a 1-0 loss to Tunisia in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers at Bingu National Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

Malawi had played nine games without a defeat under Mabedi’s mentorship but the Carthage Eagles ended the unbeaten run.

Malawi produced a sensational performance in the first half with a number of well-coordinated attacks but lack of composure hurt them in front of their supporters which led to an all-nil score in the first 45 minutes.

In the second half, the Flames struggled to settle down on the midfield and allowed the visitors free penetration when captain John Banda was substituted.

Tunisia broke the dread in the 87th minute when Chaziya brought down Seifallah Ltaeif inside the penalty box and referee from Togo, Aklesso Gnama wasted no time by awarding them a penalty.

Youssef Msekni step up and beat Munthali to give Tunisia a late lead and win.

The win lifts Tunisia to top the group with 6 points, level with Equatorial Guinea who beat Namibia and Liberia.

Meanwhile Malawi are on position 3 in the group after accumulating 3 points from 2 games.
